Update and Recording from the Offshore Drilling Community Forum

Recently, we wrapped up the public comment period for the 11th National Outer Continental Shelf Leasing Draft Proposed Program, which targets the Western and Central Gulf of Mexico, parts of the Eastern Gulf, Alaska, and California.

Despite the draft being announced the week before Thanksgiving and the holiday period cutting into nearly three weeks of organizing time, 308,398 comments were submitted to the Federal Register opposing the Program and further oil and gas expansion. That is no small feat.

This response is a clear demonstration that communities in the states most directly affected do not want drilling off their coasts. People in our community showed up in a big way, even working through the holidays to organize and participate in people’s hearings in California, including our very own in Eureka.

In case you missed it, Access Humboldt recorded the entire Community Forum. Watch the recording below:

Though the comment period has come to a close, the fight is far from finished. Stay tuned for more actions to take.
