AB 2494 Debrief and THP Comment Workshop in Caspar October 10

Last Month Governor Newsom vetoed AB2494, Assemblymember Chris Roger’s bill to update the mandate of the State Demonstration State Forest Program. The bill was sponsored by EPIC and was made possible by years of grassroots activism by The Coalition to Save Jackson, Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians, Mendocino Trail Stewards, and countless individuals who marched, rallied, sat in trees, wrote letters, signed petitions, attended hearings, and more.
It was a tremendous victory to get a new vision for the future of Jackson and the other State Demonstration State Forests all the way to the governor’s desk, and we learned many valuable lessons. Assemblymember Rogers has talked about resubmitting the bill early next year when State Legislators return to session. In the meantime, CalFire is moving ahead with their new Forest Management Plan and a number of proposed logging plans in Jackson.
Please join us on October 10 in Caspar for AB2494: Where do we go from here? A community discussion and debrief, from 1-4:30 at the Caspar Community Center. The event is co-sponsored by the Redwood Chapter, the Mendocino Trail Stewards, EPIC, and Forests Unlimited. It will feature a talk and Q&A with attorney Melodie Meyer, who led EPIC’s work on AB 2494. It will include a THP Comment Workshop with Rick Coates of Forests Unlimited, who will give us tools for monitoring and commenting on CalFire’s Timber Harvest Plans in Jackson.
This event is a chance for the community to hear the latest about AB2494 and get briefed on important next steps in the campaign to Save Jackson. Please feel free to spread the word to anyone you think might be interested.
The event is free and open to all. There will be light snacks, coffee, and tea provided.
