Please click here to send a message to Governor Gavin Newsom and other state officials expressing your support of the Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians’ May letter regarding Jackson Demonstration State Forest (JDSF). The Tribe’s letter is included here for your review, and includes powerful statements including:
“We are committed to continuing to pursue consultations regarding what ‘co-management’ means in the context of JDSF. We are as well preparing testimony to be presented to the Governor’s Truth and Healing Council in which we will be seeking land back at JDSF as reparative justice for the systematic and ongoing destruction of our ancestral cultural sites and biologic resources that have occurred since the inception of state sponsored timber operations at JDSF.
We propose that JDSF be viewed as an ancestral ‘cultural landscape’ under the AB 52 (2018) amendments to the California Environmental Quality Act. And as such, that cultural resource protection not be pursued on an archaeological by archaeological site basis but rather through a comprehensive plan reflecting the fact that the entire forest at JDSF be seen as an interactive landscape in which our ancestors lived and gathered for thousands of years.”
Sending a message will show the State that you stand with the Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians in the campaign to Save Jackson State Forest and demand that the State negotiate in good faith before continuing any work including logging operations, herbicide applications, and road building activities in JDSF.
