As you may have read in our blog or in the news, the Legislature passed and the Governor signed Senate Bill 131 (SB 131) — a sweeping CEQA rollback that threatens community health, biodiversity, and our shared climate and conservation goals. The bill was passed with little time for deliberation, and even as it was being passed, many legislators expressed the belief that it would need to be “cleaned up” because of the rushed process it underwent.
As the legislators consider how to fix their bill, there are two significant changes we want to see. First, the definition of “natural and protected lands” in the definition is too narrow. We are asking the legislators to add habitat and lands important for Natural Community Conservation Plans/Habitat Conservation Plans to the definition. Second, we are asking the legislature to remove the exemption of “advanced manufacturing” facilities, which was vaguely defined and could potentially streamline harmful facilities.
You have an opportunity to make sure that the worst parts of this bill are fixed before it’s too late! We are asking that you send a message to your state legislator and the Governor to demand changes to Senate Bill 131.
For those who live on the North Coast, we have sample messages outlined to send to your legislators. If you live outside of the North Coast, you can find your state legislator HERE. After you find who your legislator is, look to see if they’re on this list and voted for the CEQA rollbacks. You can send them the message linked here. If your legislator is on this list and voted against or abstained from voting for the CEQA rollbacks, you can send them the message linked here.
