Thank You For Helping Pass AB 1319!

Despite opposition from industry, big agriculture, and water agencies, Governor Newsom signed AB 1319, safeguarding imperiled species in California.

Thank you for urging Governor Newsom to sign this bill into law. With the signing of this bill, California is the first state to put in place a proactive approach to protect imperiled biodiversity in the face of federal rollbacks.

AB 1319 was authored by Assemblymember Nick Schultz and sponsored by Defenders of Wildlife. This bill was supported by a large coalition of organizations, including the Power in Nature Coalition of which EPIC is a part.

The Trump administration has made it clear that it intends to weaken protections for biodiversity, particularly endangered and threatened species. We expect the Trump Administration to issue a rule weakening protections for endangered species habitat by the end of the year.

AB 1319 provides the state with a more effective tool to manage these petitions by enabling it to utilize a temporary “provisional listing process,” which will save the state time and money. AB 1319 would also improve protections against the illegal trafficking of wildlife species, including protecting against the weakening of federal wildlife trafficking laws.

California has a long history of protecting its unique biodiversity for future generations. This bill continues that legacy by ensuring that our state's imperiled fish and wildlife will be protected even if the federal government walks away from its wildlife conservation responsibilities.

If possible, please take a moment to thank Assemblymember Nick Schultz and Governor Newsom for this proactive legislation that protects biodiversity.
