On Wednesday February 18 at 4 pm, the California State Water Board will be hosting a public workshop on the draft General Waste Discharge Requirements for Commercial Lily Bulb Operations in the Smith River Plain and the draft Environmental Impact Report. These permits will regulate the ongoing pollution from commercial lily bulb operations in the Smith River estuary. The workshop will be hosted at the Elk Valley Rancheria Sam Lopez Community Room at 2332 Howland Hill Road in Crescent City.
The ongoing pesticide pollution of the Smith River estuary puts at risk the air and water quality for the community of Smith River, the health of residents (including an elementary school that is adjacent to the fields), and the very existence of endangered and threatened species that exist in the estuary, such as Chinook and Coho Salmon, Tidewater Goby, and Euleachon smelt.
How to Join:
In Person: To give comments during the workshop in person, you can complete a pink speaker card located on the handout table at your time of arrival and give it to the Board Clerk.
Via Zoom: If you wish to comment from a remote location, you can complete the virtual speaker card
The agenda for the workshop, Environmental Impact Report, and Draft Lily Bulb Order can all be found at: https://www.waterboards.ca.gov/northcoast/board_info/board_meetings/02_2026/index.html
