Action Alert: Shame CAL FIRE's Deception and Stop Logging in Jackson Demonstration State Forest!
Take Action! CAL FIRE just announced that it would resume logging in Jackson Demonstration State Forest (JDSF). Last year, protestors halted logging on four Timber Harvest Plans (THPs) located in JDSF, which would have cut down large second-growth redwoods and threatened Native American Sacred Sites. In the midst of these protests, CAL FIRE announced that it would pause logging while discussing Co-Management agreements with the local tribes and rewriting their Management Plan

Action Alert: Comments Needed to Define and Protect Mature And Old-Growth Forests!
Take Action! On Earth Day, President Biden signed an Executive Order to protect mature and old-growth trees. This direction by the President begs the question: What is an old-growth tree or forest? To define what needs protection, the Department of Agriculture, which oversees the Forest Service, and the Department of the Interior, which oversees the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), have put out a request for information on how to define mature and old-growth trees (collective

Klamath Fish Kill Advisory
Last Friday, reports began coming in that a large-scale fish kill is occurring on the Klamath River and its tributaries. The fish kill is the result of a storm event on Wednesday, August 3rd, that washed sediment and debris off of mountain sides in the McKinney Fire area into the Humbug Creek and McKinney Creek waterways. The sediment then wiped out dissolved oxygen levels in the rivers causing a massive fish die-off. Sediment also inundated the Salmon River from the 2021 Riv

California Wolf Families Grow
Eleven new gray wolf pups are roaming the wilds of California this summer. Two of three established wolf packs have grown. Five were born into the Lassen Pack and six into the Whaleback Pack. After surviving the Dixie Fire last year, where a large part of their territory in the Northern Sierras burned, the family now consists of

Transmission Capacity Limit Humboldt’s Ability to Address Climate Change
By Juan Guerrero and Tom Wheeler Humboldt County is serviced by old and undersized transmission lines, capable of only meeting a portion of the energy demand of the region. These undersized lines, three running east/west and one north/size, are insufficient to meet the local energy demand. Because that demand can’t be met outside of the region, it must be produced locally—currently the majority of this local production is at the Humboldt Bay Generating Station, a methane gas

Offshore Wind on the Horizon
Offshore wind is necessary to combat the climate crisis. With gigawatts of potential energy off of Humboldt’s coast as well as one of the first two lease areas proposed on the West Coast, Humboldt is leading the nation. As a leader, it is important that we set a strong example and that we can learn from this project to better develop offshore wind development that both maximizes the potential energy created while ensuring that whatever impacts occur are avoided, minimized and
