The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently released their draft “Pacific Marten Recovery Plan.” The draft Plan is incomplete and inadequate to provide for the recovery of the marten (which EPIC usually calls the “Humboldt marten;”; others sometimes call the species the “coastal marten ”).

Green Diamond Resource Company, one of the largest industrial timber companies in California and one of the primary private owners of redwood forests, has applied for a Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) for marbled murrelets under the Endangered Species Act.

The Environmental Protection Information Center (EPIC) urges Caltrans to adopt a more robust mitigation package for the Last Chance Grade Project. The project, which would bypass the notorious slide at Last Chance Grade on Highway 101 by tunneling under the active landslide area, will remove 144 mature trees, including 16 old-growth redwood trees in Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP).
