Comments Needed: Black Butte River Tributaries At Risk
The Mendocino National Forest has released the Environmental Analysis for Plaskett-Keller August Complex Fire Phase 1 Recovery Project. Please act now to protect these recovering ecosystems. There are over 2,000 acres at stake from post-fire logging in the Wild and Scenic Black Butte watershed, a major tributary to the Eel River southeast of Covelo. A majority of the project would take live green trees and snags. The Plaskett-Keller project has been reduced dramatically since

Action Alert: Mattole Headwaters Threatened By Logging!
Humboldt Redwood Company (HRC) has proposed extensive logging in headwaters of the Upper North Fork of the Mattole. The Fox Camp THP 1-21-107-HUM is located directly adjacent to Humboldt Redwoods State Park within the ancestral territory of the Bear River Band. The plan proposes cutting of Douglas fir and hardwood forest that has never been logged. Humboldt Redwood Company did not adequately disclose such stands inside the plan area. The plan area also contains multiple north

We Are Dealing With Fire All Wrong
California is once again experiencing a record breaking fire season. Across the state, forests are burning, skies are full of smoke, and people fear for their homes and lives. There are four main culprits of the increased frequency and severity of wildfires. The first is climate change, which is causing longer and more frequent droughts. These droughts dry out vegetation which makes fires more likely to ignite, spread faster once they do, and harder to put out. This has led t

Say No To Herbicides: A New Opportunity to Comment On The North Shore Project!
The Mendocino National Forest (MNF) is proposing to spray toxic chemicals on over 1,500 acres just north of Clear Lake. The North Shore project in the 2018 Ranch Fire area also includes 500 acres of post-fire logging and 1,080 acres of planting. A majority of herbicide use would be for killing all vegetation around planted trees, which is entirely unnecessary for sapling survival. Over 400 acres includes application for non-native invasive plant species, which could be treate

Barred Owl Removal Necessary to Save Spotted Owls
The northern spotted owl is moving quickly towards extinction. The most recent demographic study shows that the owl is in steep decline across its entire range and that rate of decline is increasing in many areas. The culprits? Habitat loss and barred owls. While habitat loss was the prime cause for the species listing as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1990, invasive barred owl incursion into northern spotted owl territory is driving the species ever closer to

Redistricting California: The Environment Needs Your Voice!
California is redrawing its federal and state legislative maps (including losing one congressional seat!). That means that your legislative district might change. While environmental and climate justice advocates have been building a policy agenda for years, we currently do not have the political power in California to act on these solutions at the rate and scale required. The 2021 redistricting process is a unique moment to make key structural change: not only for the next l
