EPIC's Historic Case Goes to Trial: Pacific Lumber's Permits to Kill Indicted As this issue of Wild California goes to press, one of the most momentous trials in EPIC's history begins in Humboldt County Superior Court, almost exactly four years, to the day, since the case was first filed. The lawsuit challenges biological and legal problems with the permits issued to Maxxam/Pacific Lumber as part of the infamous Headwaters Deal, including permits to kill numerous endangered species, a 120-year "Sustained Yield Plan," and a streambed "alteration" agreement.
