The Ecology of Humboldt Bay
Humboldt Bay is one of California's largest and most biologically important coastal estuaries. Its wetlands, intertidal mudflats and marshes provide essential habitat for a great diversity of life. 141 invertebrate species, 110 fish species and 251 bird species grace its waters and shores. Problems from dredging and pollution that began early last century have gotten exceedingly worse in recent years, however, and ongoing damage to this delicate ecosystem threatens to push the Bay toward ecological collapse.
