The boomtowns are gone, but Canyon Creek still draws people from around the world. The valley north of Junction City, about ten miles west of Weaverville on Highway 299, is beginning to recover from the hydraulic gold mining that stripped its slopes and flats down to bedrock more than a century ago. Today, Canyon Creek is the single most popular gateway to the world-class scenery of the Trinity Alps Wilderness.

As the last issue of
Wild California went to press, EPIC was completing our investigation of Maxxam/Pacific Lumber's logging record, finding habitual violations of its Habitat Conservation Plan and Forest Practice Rules during the last five years. We've now compiled all the relevant records from this time period, and at the end of May, EPIC released a report that documents 325 violations issued by the state since the infamous 1999 "Headwaters Deal."
