Knob Timber Sale
February 2003
KNOB TIMBER SALE RESUBMITTED - APPEALED BY EPIC FEB 7, 2003
The Knob Timber Sale on the Salmon River Ranger District Klamath National
Forest (KNF) is a proposal to log 7.3 MMBF of mixed conifer forest on 578
acres. The logging would take place in the North and South Forks of the
Salmon River watershed, tributary to the mid-Klamath River. The KNF is
proposing a variety of logging prescriptions, including GTR clearcutting,
group selection, commercial thinning, overstory removal, seed
tree/shelterwood, sanitation, and salvage. Some temp road constructed and
some non-system road reconstructed, to be decommissioned afterward. The
Salmon River is a Tier 1 Key Watershed under the Northwest Forest Plan,
with extensive sections designated under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. It
is critical refugia for salmon and steelhead in the Klamath River system,
including summer steelhead, spring chinook, and coho. Some granitic soils.
The logging would occur in subwatersheds that have been
identified as over CWE thresholds, which the sale will exacerbate. The sale
will log some of the beautiful mature and old-growth stands in the Salmon
River Wild and Scenic River. Click here

EPIC APPEAL FORCES FOREST SERVICE TO
WITHDRAW DECISION TO LOG IN SALMON
RIVER WATERSHED
In response to an appeal submitted by EPIC and the Klamath Forest Alliance,
the Klamath National Forest recently withdrew a decision to log almost 600
acres of ancient forest in the Wild and Scenic Salmon River watershed. The
Knob Timber Sale would have destroyed critical habitat for imperiled species
such as northern spotted owls, pacific fisher, and northern Goshawk, and
would have degraded water quality in one of the most important salmon and
steelhead-bearing rivers in California. Click here
