In 1985, the Coastal Conservancy granted $1.2 million to the City of Eureka to purchase the Eureka Marsh for the express purpose of restoring and enhancing this wetland ecosystem. Nearly twenty years later, the City has still not fulfilled its obligations, and instead hopes to construct a road through the Eureka Marsh as part of its larger effort to promote port development around Humboldt Bay. This road would cut a 110-foot-wide swath through saltwater, brackish, and freshwater wetland habitat.
The Eureka Marsh has great potential, and would offer much greater rewards if it is restored rather than destroyed. Please take action to encourage the City Council to live up to its promise to restore the Eureka Marsh and to end its any further attempts to pave it.
