Proposal Threatens the Future of Rare Marbled Murrelet

Action Needed by September 30, 2008

The Bush administration plans to remove protections on critical old-growth habitat which supports imperiled marbled murrelets in Oregon and California. The proposal couldn't come at a worse time for the elusive, robin-sized seabird, as its population continues to dramatically decline each year. Loss of old-growth habitat protections would not only inhibit chances of murrelet recovery, it could well aid in its extinction.

The murrelet is a unique bird that needs healthy marine and old growth habitat for nesting and rearing its young. When the murrelet was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1992, the loss of old-growth forest was determined by scientists to be the foremost factor affecting their decline. Yet the Bush administration once again ignores solid science and aims to reduce habitat protections on 254,000 acres in order to open up more of our ancient forests to destructive logging.

Please speak up for murrelets and coastal old-growth forests. Urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reject Bush's plan to reduce critical habitat designations for the marbled murrelet in Oregon and northern California. Critical habitat is key to murrelet recovery.

Deadline for comments is Monday, September 29.
