Senate May Consider Harmful Logging Bill

Action Needed by August 31, 2006

The Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Forestry has scheduled a hearing on HR 4200, the misleadingly titled, Forest Emergency Recovery and Research Act, for August 2. However, it remains unclear whether the Senate will bring this issue to a vote this year. The House of Representatives has passed HR 4200 which would cause serious harm to our country's National Forests, according to scientists, firefighters, hunting and fishing groups, and conservationists. HR 4200 not only completely waives the National Environmental Policy Act and leaves roadless areas, old-growth forests, and other special areas unprotected, it also ignores important scientific research, threatens endangered species habitat, and could actually increase the risk of wildfire.

Please let your Senator know that you stand with the leading scientists who oppose this plan and ask them to consider the evidence. You can use the template below to send a message to Senator Feinstein and then cut and paste one to Senator Boxer on her website.

Scientists Say HR 4200 Would Harm the Environment - 169 of the nation's leading forest scientists oppose HR 4200, saying in a letter to Congress that it "is misguided because it distorts or ignores recent scientific advances.
