We are very close to removing the threat of industrial logging in Jackson State Forest -- 50,000 acres of beautiful public redwoods. But there remains one last hurdle before SB 1648 becomes law, and it's a big one: getting Governor Shwarzenegger to sign the bill!
Please help by writing the governor today and asking him to sign SB 1648, the only forest protection bill to make it through the California legislature this year. You can revise and send a letter with a click of a button below.
Jackson State Forest is located a few hours north of San Francisco, and is entirely owned by you and me. Until stopped by citizen lawsuits, the state was massively logging this public land, using the profits to subsidize the private logging industry.
Thousands of people worked for years to save this public redwood forest, and this hard work paid off this summer, when the California legislature passed SB 1648. This bill is now sitting on the Governor's desk to be vetoed or signed into law.
SB 1648 will allow continued timber production in Jackson Forest, but only within the context of scientific research, maintenance and restoration of forest resources, recreation, education, and public enjoyment. Clearcutting would be prohibited and old growth and mature forests protected for future generations.
This bill is urgently needed because the state is rushing to start logging Jackson State Forest again, using variations of clearcutting on half of the forest! Clean water, salmon, wildlife habitat, and recreation values would be largely disregarded.
We can prevent this from happening, but only if Governor Schwarzenegger signs the state forest reform bill. The California Dept. of Forestry wants to continue clearcutting in Jackson State, and is urging the Governor to veto the bill. It is imperative that he hear from a huge number of citizens urging him to do the opposite, ensuring this public forest is protected. It will take you only a minute to send your letter. Please do it now.
Let's make sure the governor knows the public is watching and wants his signature on this bill.
Thank you for your help!
