Coalition to Save Richardson Grove
Since people first heard the news that CalTrans was cooking up a plan to widen Highway 101 through Richardson Grove State Park to accommodate for the largest trucks allowed on highways in the U.S., community activists organized the Coalition to Save Richardson Grove This group of dedicated organizers have kept the heat on CalTrans, through every step of their planning process and have brought many issues to light.
Already this group has successfully forced CalTrans to produce environmental planning documents to examine expected impacts of the proposed projects. This group also distributes EPIC’s colorful posters and postcards to local businesses and at events, plans public outreach events and assists people in writing effective letters to the editor of local newspapers. The diverse coalition includes local business owners, artists and musicians, environmental activists, Tribal members, attorneys, biologists, doctors, economists, and firefighters.
The Coalition meets regularly and has organized several committees to focus participation. To join the coalition or learn more, write Kerul Dyer at kerul @wildcalifornia.org or call the EPIC office at (707) 822-7711.
6 Comments so farI think we need to shift the protest and anti protests twards the richardson grove bypass when the state has funding and save any funds for the bypass. Im sorry, The day PB met Mr. Demick at a poorly attended caltrans meeting in the small display room at the eureka libary, well as I recall Tim Mckay did not even attend. I rember promissing all fans of reggae on the river would protest them well we have a new site for our community show. a bridge at the old site would not be tragic or protested as the last bridge at confusion hill even though large old trees were cut. caltrans owns the footing for the bridge they need to aquire the landing on a clearcut hillside. I believe all roads must be pulled from the parks and give them back to the wild life we are trespassing on their land.
Comment by Das Smith 05.25.10 @ 2:16 pmAbout to go to the DEIR meeting here in Marin Co as we have a very simular proposed project in the S.P Taylor State Park were old growth reside.
We will be watching the Richardson grove attempt and will comment to defend the ecological systems of both projects.
Was a viaduct considered in place of an at grade roadway? It may be possible to place supports [piling] for an above [a foot or so] grade road deck, with minimum damage to those magnificent trees.
Was a viaduct along the South Fork Eel River considered?

Having just travelled from London, England, to visit Richardson Grove, I wish to add my support to your worthy cause. No old growth Redwoods should be allowed to be felled. They are a magnificent link to our past and should be protected at all costs. I would welcome any update you may have. Good luck!
