Next Steps: Campaign to Protect Richardson Grove

Friday May 21st 2010, 8:11 am Categories:

Thank you for taking action to protect Richardson Grove.  Now is the time to work together to protect the ancient grove of redwoods within Richardson Grove State Park.  We have received overwhelming support that has already helped to slow down Caltrans.  Already, over 2,000 people have sent postcards to protect Richardson Grove from Caltrans’ destructive project.

If you have not already done so, please take a moment to join our email list to receive updates on the Richardson Grove Project.  You can also help by making a donation to the Save Richardson Grove Fund, or volunteer by downloading or  ordering an activist packet online.

With all the sickening cuts to the budget proposed by Schwarzenegger, “projects” like this make no sense. It’s a waste of money and environmentally a fiasco.

And besides a few truckers, who exactly would benefit from this costly and environmentally destructive proposal?

This is the new California. Arnie and his rich friends will let poor people starve but there is all the money in the world for special projects like this one.

Not acceptable! Not financially sound, not environmentally responsible. Wake up!

When are we going to wake up and preserve these valuable natural resources? I’ve commuted that road numerous time and the beauty alone if worth preserving. Who exactly would benefit? How about buying locally and becoming more sustainable in our communities and ending these unsound practices of trucking everything all over the country.

I just don’t get it…there is no money for the schools in our area, but there is money to burn on a road widening project that only benefits a few while having a devastating effect on many. where are our priorities here??

The widening of the road through the most beautiful Richardson Grove should not happen. It can never be replaced. Our grandchildren will never know the tremendous beauty and tranquillity of the drive through the Grove.

Greed on the part of a few people is hard to imagine. We must stop this expensive project now.

I am willing to participate and/or organize direct action if need be.We saved as much as we could of the Headwaters Forest, surely we can saved OUR STATE PARK! WE own it. We can and will protect it. There are enough of us to prevail! Let’s put our minds together and create a better future for our children and their grandchildren.

We must preserve this ancient grove of redwoods, no where else in the world can we weave thru giant trees that have outlived generations of men and women. It wasn’t long ago that these amazing conifers stretched all the way to Santa Rosa.

Richardson Grove at 101 is a unique area in that it affords motorists an opportunity to drive through a Redwood Forest. It is difficult to drive through this section of the park without being awed by the towering beauty of these magnificent redwoods. The experience is free for all to enjoy.

True 101 narrows through this region of redwoods but only because of the thoughtful design by the
engineers of 101 long ago, does this rich experience exist. All motor vehicles autos or trucks need to be cautious while driving this stretch of highway. The distance through redwoods
is short, peaceful, and refreshing.

Future plans for resurrecting the north south rail line between Eureka and the Bay area will allow a great amount of freight that is currently being transported by truck on 101 to be
transported via rail rather than surface road. Backers of the rail line, which already exists, cite many times the benefit of the rail line will reduce truck hauling using highway 101.

Once these magnificent redwoods are removed, they are gone forever. The department of
transportation should not proceed with plans to widen 101 at Richardson Grove. The loss of this habitat is not worth it. This magnificent stretch of 101 should never be altered by widening.
